The 19th of March may been just another day for the rest of you, but for the students of Regent International College Gampaha, it was a much anticipated day that promised to deliver music, dance, literature and buckets loads of fun…..!

And if you are wondering; “What was so special about that day?” well, it was the college’s annual English Day program. And let me tell you, when the curtains closed for the day, it had exceeded the expectations of the participants and on-lookers.

From Romeo & Juliet to Hansel & Gretel, Snow-white to The Merchant of Venice were brought to life onstage. Little kids in adorable costumes sang in harmony to “If you’re Happy and You Know It”, while the older boys and girls sang and danced to the beautiful tunes of ‘Sound of Music’ and ‘My Fair lady’. Elegant recitations, smart speeches and piano duets were also among the kaleidoscope of items that unfolded in front of an awed audience who were enthusiastically clapping in appreciation of the hard-work the students and the teachers of R.I.C. put forth to make the event so enjoyable. Of course all these items were, for a lack a better term, polished up with the excellent compeering of the members from the Media Unit!

However our annual English day is not only about showcasing the talents of the students but also acknowledging them.

Thus a price distribution was also held to motivate, encourage and inspire the students who competed and won in the series of competitions organized by the English Literacy Association. These competitions varied from recitations, story-telling, handwriting to designing. The winners also had the privilege to perform onstage and to show us what they can do.

All in all, I believe that in hosting such an event, we at Regent, fulfilled a basic duty of a school i.e.; Identifying, appreciating and showcasing the talent and the creativity of each individual.

As someone wise once said -“Everyone has their own share of talent at some kind of field; it is just a matter of how far you are wiling to dig in to excavate it…!”
